eBay Plans End To Third-Party Checkout Solutions

In the not-particularly-near future, eBay’s checkout process will become a simpler affair.  The company announced today that it intends to stop supporting third-party checkout solutions on June 30th of next year.

This seems like a wise move for several reasons.  For starters, it will grant eBay more complete control over its site, and search boxes and Facebook widgets aside, it’s usually wise for companies not to rely on others.  Too many things can go wrong, diluting the brand and/or spoiling the users’ experience.

Half.com Launches iPhone Comparison Shopping App

eBay owned Half.com has released an iPhone application Buying Wizard aimed at helping users comparison shop for deals on textbooks.

The Half.com iPhone app is the first eBay buying application to integrate barcode scanning technology. The app allows users to scan barcodes on items to find the best deal on textbooks, DVDs, novels and video games.

PayPal to Offer Micropayment Service

PayPal may release a micropayment service before th year ends if reports are accurate. President Scott Thompson is said to have indicated as much.

The move would make too much sense not to come sooner or later, and sooner would no doubt be in PayPal’s best interest. Not only are social games among the biggest trends of the web, but news organizations are still experimenting with ways to drive revenues, and micropayments are not out of the question for some.

eBay Bucks Moves Out Of Beta

eBay said today it is launching its first-ever rewards program called eBay Bucks.

Any eBay user who lives in the U.S. and is a registered member of the site can participate in the eBay Bucks program. eBay Bucks offers shoppers 2 percent back on most items purchased through the site with PayPal.

eBay Impressed By Facebook’s “Like” Buttons

A confirmation of Facebook’s power has come courtesy of the online auction company that itself earned $2.2 billion in revenue last quarter.  eBay thinks Facebook’s "Like" buttons represent a good way to increase sales.

Maybe you’ve noticed a "Like" button attached to one of eBay’s Daily Deals, or its Fashion Vault.  Those didn’t appear by mistake, and it’s possible they’ll spread.

PayPal Launches New Android App with Bump Technology

PayPal has announced the launch of version 2 of its Android app. This feature "bump" technology, which lets two users bump their phones together to send money (much like the existing iPhone app).

eBay Launches “Bucks” Rewards Program in the U.S.

eBay has launched a rewards program called eBay Bucks, which is free and open to all U.S. eBay users. Consumers can get 2% back on most items purchased through eBay’s Marketplace with PayPal.

The program was previously available in beta, but now it’s widely available. Users will get reward certificates at the beginning of each calendar quarter for the amount of eBay Bucks accumulated in the previous quarter. You have 30 days to spend the eBay bucks. They will be automatically applied to purchases upon checkout.

eBay Financial Report Tops Forecasts

Believe it or not, this is a good – or even great – day to be an eBay shareholder.  Although Google and Yahoo’s stocks basically fell off cliffs following iffy earnings reports earlier this week, eBay managed to publish some positive numbers this afternoon and has seen its stock jump in after-hours trading as a result.

eBay Talks Upcoming Updates for Sellers

eBay announced its upcoming seller updates for the fall. eBay’s Dinesh Lathi says the updates will help sellers take advantage of increased holiday traffic, maximize sales, and streamline their operations. "As promised, we’re continuing to consolidate changes that impact your selling into two or three releases per year with lead time to adapt," he says.

eBay Launches Social Media Seller Initiative

eBay sellers who use Twitter and Facebook on a regular basis might soon receive a bit of recognition for their efforts.  Something called the eBay Ink Social Media Seller program has launched, and while it’s still very much in the early stages, it’s not looking like a terrible idea.

eBay Turns to Microsoft for Cloud Computing

Microsoft and eBay made a joint announcement this morning, declaring that eBay will be one of Microsoft’s first customers for its Windows Azure cloud computing platform appliance. eBay will incorporate Azure into two of its data centers.

Analyst Pushes eBay To Launch Fulfillment Program

In the past year, eBay’s stock has risen by 17.57 percent.  Amazon’s stock has risen by 40.92 percent.  It’s possible to argue that eBay might learn a thing or two from Amazon, then, and an analyst at RBC Capital has done so by suggesting that eBay launch a program similar to Fulfillment by Amazon.

eBay Ends AdCommerce PPC Ads on eBay.com and eBay.ca

Starting on August 4th, eBay will be retiring its AdCommerce placements on eBay.com and eBay.ca. It will continue to offer the service in Europe and Australia.

This is a program that allowed eBay sellers to purchase pay-per-click ads on search result pages linking to their eBay stores and listings.

PayPal X Platform Toolkit Available for Google App Engine

PayPal is offering a new open source toolkit for Google App Engine that lets you integrate Java apps running on App Engine with the new PayPal Adaptive Payments API. The Adaptive Payments API lets developers embed payments into their apps, services, and platforms.

eBay’s BlackBerry App Offered In 6 More Countries

When announcing its acquisition of RedLaser one week ago, eBay noted that a purchase is made every two seconds using eBay’s mobile apps.  Only now, as impressive as that frequency is, the delay between purchases may decrease, since the eBay application for BlackBerry has become available in six more countries.

eBay Acquires Barcode-Scanning iPhone App

A popular iPhone app is now the property of eBay and about to get much better.  eBay announced this afternoon that it’s acquired RedLaser, and the company best known for its auction site intends to make the app free, increase merchandise selection, and integrate it into other products.

RedLaser is actually free as of this moment – eBay made that transition immediately – so don’t hesitate to act if you’re interested in trying it out.  The app is meant to help consumers look up product information and compare prices online.

The iPhone 4 is scheduled for release on June 24th. eBay has prepared for this and has set some rules for how the site will handle sales.

Microsoft Launches Internet Fraud Alert System

Microsoft, eBay and PayPal have launched an Internet Fraud Alert system aimed at helping security researchers report information they find online about stolen data.

Microsoft says its Internet Fraud Alert service will allow security researchers to more securely share information with service providers, retailers, financial institutions and government entities about incidents where compromised account credentials have been discovered.

 

Second PayPal X Developer Challenge Announced

Look for many, many interesting new PayPal apps and services to surface over the next four or so months.  The second PayPal X Developer Challenge was announced today, and the competition is sure to draw lots of participants with $150,000 in prizes on the line.

A PayPal representative explained in an email to WebProNews, "[T]he grand prize is worth $100,000 – $50,000 will be deposited directly into the winner’s PayPal account and the other $50,000 will go towards waived transaction fees."
