At first glance, Like.com looks like your ordinary, run of the mill e-commerce site, but the technology behind it has apparently caught Google’s eye.
eBay has launched a rewards program called eBay Bucks, which is free and open to all U.S. eBay users. Consumers can get 2% back on most items purchased through eBay’s Marketplace with PayPal.
The program was previously available in beta, but now it’s widely available. Users will get reward certificates at the beginning of each calendar quarter for the amount of eBay Bucks accumulated in the previous quarter. You have 30 days to spend the eBay bucks. They will be automatically applied to purchases upon checkout.
Amazon announced its second quarter earnings today. Net sales were up 41% at $6.57 billion, compared with $4.65 billion in the second quarter of ’09.
"Excluding the $48 million unfavorable impact from year-over-year changes in foreign exchange rates throughout the quarter, net sales would have grown 42% compared with second quarter 2009," the company said.
eBay announced its upcoming seller updates for the fall. eBay’s Dinesh Lathi says the updates will help sellers take advantage of increased holiday traffic, maximize sales, and streamline their operations. "As promised, we’re continuing to consolidate changes that impact your selling into two or three releases per year with lead time to adapt," he says.
Starting on August 4th, eBay will be retiring its AdCommerce placements on eBay.com and eBay.ca. It will continue to offer the service in Europe and Australia.
This is a program that allowed eBay sellers to purchase pay-per-click ads on search result pages linking to their eBay stores and listings.

PayPal is offering a new open source toolkit for Google App Engine that lets you integrate Java apps running on App Engine with the new PayPal Adaptive Payments API. The Adaptive Payments API lets developers embed payments into their apps, services, and platforms.
Google has a new Android Payment Extension for the Google Checkout Store Gadget. This allows people to make purchases with their phones, and would be helpful to merchants who wish to accept credit cards.
Alibaba.com has announced its acquisition of Vendio, a multi-channel e-commerce company offering solutions for small businesses that let them sell through channels such as eBay, Amazon, and their own Vendio-supported stores.
Through the acquisition, Alibaba is gaining access to over 80,000 targeted small businesses in the U.S. and can direct them to Alibaba’s own Aliexpress wholesale transaction platform.
As you may know, there is talk that the U.S. Postal Service could end mail delivery on Saturdays. Internet companies that ship items to consumers don’t all have the same opinion on this matter, as is evidenced by comments from Amazon and Netflix.
Retailers generated nearly $31 million in online coupon sales through RetailMeNot.com in May, according to the site. That’s over a 42% increase compared to the same time last year, and that’s just through RetailMeNot.
The company has released a report looking at coupon usage and search behavior in the month of May. RetailMeNot says it’s in a unique position to track trends in the coupon industry, as it is the most highly trafficked coupon site and the only site with over 450,000 coupons for both online and in-store offers.
Over 300 newspapers have joined together with Ranger Data Technologies to launch a new online auction site called Boocoo that would compete with eBay, and hopefully boost newspapers’ revenues. The auction site puts an emphasis on local auctions.

Google has announced the launch of Commerce Search 2.0 for retailers in the United States and the United Kingdom. This is a new version that the company says provides a better online experience for shoppers, as well as greater control, while providing immediate ROI for retailers.
Google Commerce Search originally launched back in November. It was kind of like Google Site Search, specifically tailored to e-commerce and product sites.

Amazon announced the launch of its official iPad app today. It’s now available in Apple’s App Store.
"Following the launch of the Amazon App for iPhone and iPod touch, we’ve used our customers’ feedback to help us build a fun and intuitive shopping destination on the iPad," says Director of Amazon Mobile Sam Hall. "This application offers customers a unique, interactive experience that takes full advantage of the visual and tactile nature of the iPad."
We’ve run several stories on e-commerce site Bonanzle in the past. If you’re unfamiliar with it, it’s a site where many disgruntled eBay users turned for an alternative place to sell their goods. Last year, it reached a million listings in 6 months and was voted the best eBay alternative according to Examiner.com. Growth continued from there, with the company surpassing 100,000 registered users in September, representing 5,000% growth in a year.
SeeWhy has released an eBook with an interesting premise for online retailers. It looks at how the top 10 converting e-commerce sites drive their website conversions. The main takeaway, a representative for SeeWhy tells WebProNews is that "the top 10 converting e-commerce sites, on average, convert roughly 10 times as many visitors into customers as the typical site — 23 percent vs. 2-3 percent."
I probably don’t have to tell you that time is valuable, but is this something you are considering when it comes to your customers’ time?
If you run an e-commerce business, you have to consider that consumers want to spend as little time on your site as possible. That’s not to say that they don’t want to buy from you. They just want to be able to do so quickly, and the more time you make them spend on the buying process, the less likely they are to actually buy from you (remember – the competition may only be a click away).
A recent study found that consumers are getting more comfortable with mobile shopping, and you best believe that will only continue, as people continue to spend more of their web time on their phones. So as everybody reaches for their mobile devices to make payments, which platforms are they going to use?
eBay has expanded into six new European markets by adding new sites in Russia, Czech Republic, Greece, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. Shoppers in these countries now have eBay sites that actually cater to their local needs. That accounts for about 180 million shoppers, according to the company.
"The good news for sellers is that these buyers will be directed to listings on eBay.co.uk which may help increase sales for businesses that offer international shipping," eBay says.
As you know, smartphone usage is on the rise, and that means more opportunities for businesses to sell to customers via their mobile devices. We often hear about how important mobile is to the marketing strategy and especially future strategies, but how much are consumers really into shopping from their phones?
Google Checkout’s Advanced Buyer Messaging (gift messaging) feature has been taken out of beta. This feature, which was released over a year ago lets Google Checkout customers add gift messages, add additional instructions, and request gift receipts.
eBay has reported its financial results for the fourth quarter, and with revenue for the quarter at $2.4 billion, up 16% from the same period in 2008. That includes revenue of $112.0 million from Skype for the period that eBay fully owned it. Excluding Skype from the fourth quarter of 2008 and the fourth quarter of 2009, revenue growth would have been 19%.

An attorney general is suing a Redmond-based e-commerce service providing company, which had faltered on its promises of bringing up Web Traffic for a number of small businesses, driving many customers to file complaints.
Attorney General Rob McKenna reportedly stated that, “When it comes to Internet search results, every small business wants to pull a high ranking. Merchants hoping to increase their online sales paid thousands of dollars to Visible.net and Captures.com but didn’t always receive the top listings and other services they were promised.”
E-commerce sites are heavy users of search engine marketing; with each of the top ten search engine marketers being retail or comparison-shopping sites according to comScore qSearch Market report.
In March, close to 20 billion sponsored links were offered to U.S. Internet users from the top search engines. eBay was the top search engine marketer with 802 million sponsored link exposures.
U.S. online retail is maturing quickly. One indication is that e-commerce sales growth will drop below 20 percent for the first time next year.
With maturing Internet sales, along with the possible slowdown of the U.S. economy, year over year e-commerce sales are expected to be lower. eMarketer estimates online retail sales will grow 21 percent to $131 billion this year. During the next four years, sales will increase at 17 percent compound annual growth rate.
In 2006, spending online increased by twenty four percent, a sizable margin to be sure. The numbers for online retail keep climbing, but do the signs point to a plateau somewhere in the near future? Or will the growth of online spending continue to skyrocket at this fast pace?
Wish-lists and e-gift certificates are necessities for sites that sell goods online. But usability flaws are potentially limiting their reach as the online marketplace swells. It doesn’t help that a large portion of the population may not have psychologically accepted them, nor does it help that an emailed gift certificate has a high likelihood of being marked as a phishing attempt.
