Gmail's New Look

Some new/updated features you’ll notice in Gmail are:

New Conversation View
The conversation view has been completely redesigned. You’ll now see see profile pictures for your contacts in your email conversations.

Elastic Density
With the new Gmail you can now control the spacing between elements on your screen. This can be modified anytime via the display density menu, located under settings.

All New Search
Gmail’s search has been improved with a dropdown menu which allows you to specify exactly what you want to search (e.g. emails to a certain sender, or a certain word in the subject or body). Email filters can also be created from the same menu, from any search.

HD Themes
The themeing system has been completely rebuilt, now each theme utilizes high resolution imagery. All of the current themes have been updated, and your current theme will be carried when switched.

Navigation
The left-side navigation has also received a facelift, as the new layout keeps your most used labels in view at all times. If you find yourself stuff being hidden by the collapsing menu, you can resize this by simply clicking on the dividing line and dragging it down. Gmail will remember your new menu settings.

For those of you who hadn’t made the change yet, Google has made it for you. The next time you login to your Gmail account you’re greeted with a box welcoming you to Gmail’s new look accompanied by the following video:

Not a fan of the new look? Well you can, “temporarily postpone the switch to the new look in the new settings menu“. But what’s the point in that? As Gmail’s new look will more than likely be made permanent in the near future… better just get used to it now.

Google’s Gmail blog has been taking an in-depth look at Gmails new look. Today they posted about activating the changes everyone:

The dedication of our testing team helped us catch bugs early so we could fix them in preparation for launch. Once we felt that the new look was good enough to be used by others, we turned it on for all Googlers.

Sure Google is happy with the changes, but a lot of Twitter users don’t agree:

New gmail, you are decreasing my productivity. #ihatethenewgmail 12 minutes ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto

Lovin’ the all new Gmail layout. :) 4 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

It’s unclear at the moment how long users will be able to revert back to the old Gmail look, but why not just embrace the new look? It will be the default look very shortly, you might as well get used to it.

Why do you think some people don’t like Gmail’s new look? Thoughts about the new look in general? Let us know in the comments.

i would love to active new look awesome. thanks google.

  • viral

    good

  • Another Gmailer

They pretty much screwed everything up even more as it used to be.

    * illogical and clunky layout

    * no clearly defined visual boundaries

    * incoherent and bland icons

    * buttons jump around

    * way too much options

    • Kourian

That’s it. In. A. Nutshell. That’s it. Really incomprehensible they’d do this. What new class of brain dead dweebs did they get to work there? It’s really a staggering fail on all counts. Don’t they realise they are staring at their test screens for months on end and others won’t? Are they that dense? Must be. This is a historically huge fail for Google. Staggering.

      • Gary

        I agree 100%

        • Alexandre

It is curious that Mr. Page is against Gmail´s users who are wholly against the new look!

          • dimitar

Amazingly such design has been approved!
It is mildly said – awful!

    • http://www.sydmarketing.com Richard

your spot on! normally I’m open to layout changes and function changes such as the one’s facebook rolled out, and I normally hate people yapping about it too. But google are going bland, getting rid of any colour which helps you navigate. I may as well go back to my hotmail account now.

    • http://www.wix.com/polalor/physics_shrouded_in_mist Peter J. OLalor

      I concur

    • http://www.practicalsports.com Frank

      Agreed.

    • Fozzy

      “incoherent and bland icons”
I don’t like the icons. They are not obvious. They missed the “Don’t Make Me Think” boat on the icons.

The rest of it, I love. Though, I use the default theme. Maybe it’s worse with background images and what not?

    • David

I agree with you. There are not any clear boundaries which are very confusing.

      • Fabio

        There are NO boundaries!!!

Now conversations look like an GIANT e-mail and is impossible to find one specific e-mail in a conversation.

PLEASE keep the old gmail look as an option FOREVER!

    • http://www.macam-2.com/ Jali

Yes. I don’t like the new look too. The old is very user-friendly and comfortable to me.

      • Susan

Why can’t we have a choice?!!! I hate this new look and have opted to keep the older, better look for as long as I can. Now, they’ve taken away my choice! I agree with all the many, many others who have complained about specific things in the new Gmail. The list of problems is endless. Why do the wishes or likes of the few outweigh the majority of gmail users that really dislike this new look? Do we all just need to go back to aol or hotmail? Does anyone know how to get the old look back?

    • Scott

The new gmail look is disgusting. At least they offer you the ability to temporarily revert to the old style. When you switch back, click the “Tell us why” link and tell them you liked g-mail just fine the way it was! I don’t want to temporarily revert back- I want to permanently revert back to the old style!

    • elspeth mcveigh

Horrible layout… and now they appear to be imposing it on me by degrees…
I have tried to transfer my e mails to yahoo without success… irritating beyond measure.
Google has to admit they have made a major mistake and count their losses.
I am meanwhile trying to get out.

  • Carol Goughnour

How does one access Contact list now? And I miss the arrows for scrolling….the bar is tiring to my fingers.

    • http://www.webpronews.com/ Jeremy Muncy

Under the Gmail logo you’ll notice the word “Mail” with an arrow beside it. Click the arrow and you should see “Contacts” tab displayed.

      • John

That’s just a bad joke. In the same space they had before the three options just to access with one click. Now ANOTHER useless menu for only two options!! Mind blowing! And that’s not all, even more menus on the right, even called similar: Options, Settings… what the heck are these guys thinking. Why not ONE menu accessible via the user name? A bad joke. Very disappointed!!

  • Larry Clayton

I’m leaving gmail; it’s insulting to require me to try to get used to that clunky
    innovation. Thanks for NOTHING.

    • Larry Clayton

Are you backward compatibility? Apparently not. I couldn’t figure out to go back to my good tried and true gmail. Rats!

      • http://www.webpronews.com/ Jeremy Muncy

If you wish to revert back to the old look simply locate your settings menu “The gear in the left corner”, click it. Scroll down and choose “revert to the old look temporarily”.

        • http://ukbvd.com/xmaslaunch3.html derek nice

you mean top right for the gear wheel

          • http://www.webpronews.com/ Jeremy Muncy

Doh! Yes, you are correct sir.

Thanks for the clarification, my apologies.

          • John

I did it with all my Gmail accounts!
There is not even only one wheel, now you’ve got TWO! Unbelievable, makes me check the calender. Maybe it’s April Fools’ Day in Google-Land… Only explanation I have.

        • Susan

Unfortunately, this no longer works. They’ve taken away that choice—-probably because too many opted out of the new look. Now, we’re stuck!

  • Paul Weatherford

I need to get into my gmail, because I have information that I need to share with my instructor at Lively Tech. Cen.

    • http://www.webpronews.com/ Jeremy Muncy

Gmail’s new look shouldn’t be keeping you out of your email… you might consider emailing support on this matter.

  • Disappointed

Argh!!!! What a piece of crap! I hate the new gmail, seriously bummed any way to create a local layer or another web based app to just store\search gmail old data. I can not believe they woudl do this to a good product, really disappointed

  • http://www.webpronews.com/ Chris Crum

I’ve been using it for a while. Like most changes, it wasn’t too hard to get used to.

  • http://www.faxlogic.com Eric Lenington

I hate it. But hey, it’s free software, so they can do whatever they want. I have only one recourse: to find another email service.

  • Sam Cullan

New Gmail is shit. Looks awful and is impossible to navigate. I’ll be looking for an alternative.

    • http://www.webpronews.com/ Jeremy Muncy

What part of the navigation do are you finding troublesome?

      • menu-mania

        * too many useless menus
        * icons without text or just only text like before
        * STAR in different positions depending on view

  • http://www.ssrichardmontgomery.com ron

They are messing it up like facebook did, just put it back!

  • Gords

Hate it. Going to go to another mail site.

  • Katy

DO NOT LIKE and DO NOT LIKE THE NEW EMAIL. I think it is horrible that you are forcing it on us. I have loved Google – not so much now

  • http://www.completeitservices.co.uk Jamie Richards

I’m not a fan of Gmails new look, when Gmail first arrived in the market place I really took to it. Over the years it has become more about looks rather than performance. Not for me this new release. People stick with a platform because it works and looks simple. Change isnt always good!

  • Tech42

Google seems to be making a lot of changes “for your own good” lately.

Why not just leave the preferences to the user? It’s clearly possible as they’ve been doing just that during this transition period.

Here’s a hint, Google: Firefox personas are very popular for a reason – people don’t like being told what they like.

  • Katy

forgot to say that it functions like yahoo did about 500 years ago. very archaic in appearance and functionality. Also, pictures??? instead of words???? REALLY??? is this to encourage a TOTALLY ignorant society who can’t read?

  • http://www.garlandinhomecare.com James White

Change is inevitable. You have to go with it. Took me a lot of years to discover that. lol

  • http://www.mmwaxmodels.com MM

It will take practice to get used to the new layout. The old style with the menu on the left side of the page was easier to use. It’s kind of like when you move to a new city…. need to learn your way around or else stay lost and confused. Adapt to your environment.

    • evolution

If it only were like that. But it is not. For example, you HAVE TO click more to get to certain options… it definitely slows down productivity.

  • http://www.webpronews.com/ Jeremy Muncy

I’m a bit shocked that SO many people dislike Gmail’s new look.

    • karl hackbarth

really?? we have a web site and everyone coments on how simple it is no things flying arround bells just simple needed info. The mother of invevtion is to make life easy ( simple ) I agree with many just a simple format so I can do what I need to with out jumping arround

      • Vaughn Akins

Why are you shocked? What you’ve done is provide a platform more screwed up than Yahoo’s latest efforts and forced us to invest enormous time and energy trying to figure out how to do what was simple in the last iteration. I sincerely hope that, before enough folks migrate away in disgust, you’ll figure out that you’ve created a monster that isn’t liked for very good reasons and recant.

    • david eldridge

People like choice. When we are told about a change that offers no obvious benefits and takes us out of our comfort zone, in addition something that is visually inferior, we just ask, why change at all? A straight forward choice would be a reasonable solution. Nothing really new is being offered and punters are being aked to part with a classic which we are proud to be associated with already.

  • carrie roberts

absolutely hate it!! most of my work is done on a netbook and it’s impossible to scroll to see everything. the fonts are distorted, the themes are too dark and I can’t read my tags and labels. Really looking for a new email program now,

  • http://ukbvd.com/xmaslaunch3.html derek nice

I love it now got use to it, Not really that much different Better than the stupid FB make over

  • http://www.JasminePartners.com David Brown

I say bring back the old look. I see what they are trying to do, but it is a real step backward for unsophisticated users.

And you didn’t ask, but I feel pretty much the same way about Lion. It is the first time I am truly disappointed in Apple!

The black background with white text is difficult to read and hard on the eyes. I am a technical communicator and publisher with 25 years experience developing documentation and website for global users–this is the most difficult combination to use. Please go back to dark type on light background or I’ll have to change my email provider.

    • http://www.webpronews.com/ Jeremy Muncy

You can change your theme to the one called “Light” … this should solve your biggest complaint.

  • Sheila Pastore

I don’t like it. Ifind the new look confusing. For one thing, I could not locate the draft box. Wish you’d leave good enough alone, or at least do some customer evaluations before you force changes on us.

  • Andre

if you can add custom themes, would be cool other than that, looks the same as from mail.com

  • http://realestatepropertyscout.co.cc Erich Seifert

I didn´t like the new Layout. It is the biggest bullshit since facebook.

  • http://mobilewebsitedesignuk.co.uk Mobile Web Design UK

Whilst the layout may look pretty they have gone over the top making the whole dashboard to clunky and over designed. This is a bad move in my opinion when the rest of the web is moving towards easier and user friendly interfaces.

  • David

    Worse

  • http://www.alda-architects.co.uk Alan

Hard to get excited, but it is fine. Will take a few weeks to get accustomed and then no one will remember the current.

    • efficency

Sorry, I’ve to disagree. It’s more effort to navigate in certain areas, that won’t change even if you get used to it. You know it could be quicker each single time you have to click where you didn’t have to before. As a power user I won’t accept it and will change… maybe back to good old Thunderbird for most of the time.

  • Humpty Dumpty

In a word the changes are “Crap”.

IMHO its a lead up to forcing all gmail users to have a Google+ account so they can claim victory over facebook, not that I know a real person who actually uses it.

Migrated to another email server, but am pissed that I had to go through the who exercise.

    • http://www.webpronews.com/ Jeremy Muncy

Interesting that you bring up the Google+ angle, as it was just announced that Google is integrating contacts and Gmail with Google+.

      Here is more on that:
      http://www.webpronews.com/gmail-google-2-2011-12

      • Humpty Dumpty

There are several articles around regarding Googles intention of integtrating all of googles services into Google+.

What the 2nd rate dorks (Striebeck & cohorts) behind this innovation dont seem to realise is that the majority of their users dont want their email service integrated into a social media service, when the users finally realise what is going on the slow exodus will become a flood.

Also makes me wonder how long it will be before Facebook introduces an email service, they can mop up googles customers the same way that they attracted the competent managers from google, by giving them what they want…..

    • Nick

My thought exactly when I saw google+ profile pictures appearing in some of my email threads. I do not know why they think integrating my email with a social networking site is a good idea. Not much faith that they will realize their mistake so I’ll be making an email provider switch in the near future.

  • http://www.studioartistx.nl Alexander

As long as I can keep my default theme, I don’t care very much about new layouts nor features.. nothing interesting for now anyway.

  • http://www.eufreeads.com Eufreeads

I didn’t pay much attention to the notification on my dashboard until recently when my son told me I should change to the new look. I listened to him and changed it only to revert back because I didn’t like it. I could not find my way around and I didn’t have time to start trying things out. I guess I am used to the old looks. I am not the change quick guy. I will keep the old one as long as it takes.

Moreover, it is not the look that matters as long as I can send and receive mails without problem.

    Thanks for this piece.

  • Steve Watson

I thought it was terrible, couldn’t read it, until I realized that you can change the colors and theme. Looks pretty good.

  • http://ithinqware.net delliott

  • dbang

I don’t see what the fuss is all about. I like it it. Have no problems navigating. It feels cleaner.

    • John

The new layout itself is not bad (of course in the eye of the beholder) BUT the functionality/performance… having more menus, fancy icons instead of a clear word … and so on. THAT’S what makes the new layout a big muck up!

  • drdoug99

If you don’t like Gmail’s look, just use a real email client like Thunderbird or Outlook or even Windows Live Mail works quite well and you have your computer at work, and computer at home setup with IMAP so all email is synced on Google’s email server…it’s what I do and have no trouble, I have Thunderbird as my mail client….I rarely actually goto “gmail.com” and use their web interface.

If people don’t like change they should not be using technology LOL…it’s only the industry with the most rapidly changing standards EVER. You either adapt to it or shut up about it and don’t use computers, or phones, or internets anymore.

    • http://triangoblong.org ihatethenewgmail

      you’re an idiot.

      • drdoug99

        sorry, you are.

if you can’t figure out how to use a web based email interface, then you are.

It took me all of 2 minutes to learn all I need to write new email, check my IMAP folders, etc.

Do you even know what IMAP is?

I’ve been using computers and technology since before you were born probably, so FOAD

    • drdoug99

Ok, I just tried out Gmail’s new look.

Took me all of 2 minutes to get used to it, I even tried 3 different themes and ended up using the Terminal theme. I didn’t even know you could have themes in Gmail before LOL.

I agree with the lack of color for the buttons, it does seem dull, but as far as usability goes, for the rare times I actually use this new web mail interface instead of using my home or work PC’s with Thunderbird, I am already proficient at it after 2 minutes, so it’s no big deal.

People just need to take their energy they use to whine and complain, and actually relax and RTFM once in a while, you’d be amazed at what you can learn.

  • http://triangoblong.org ihatethenewgmail

why can’t i easily search the google webisphere from within my inbox anymore? now i have to open a new tab or a new window, when what i want to do is a f*cking google search from within a f*cking google product that used to allow it.

  • http:www.renapump.com Bill

Hate it, tried several “looks” and did not find any of them as easy to use as the original which took me a few days to find everything. The worst part is that I got my first smart phone and am heavily integrated into gmail, tasks, calendar etc. I switched back and complained for the second time about the problems. Hopefully , we’ll get some more options.

  • http://windowashin.com Steven Brick

So far I miss the old Gmail look. It’s not clear to me yet what is better about the new look and I feel lost in the new environ.
