George Takei has had a throng of loyal fans since his days on Star Trek, but in recent years his oh-so-shareable social media presence and stance on gay rights has brought on a huge surge in his popularity. Now, a documentary is soon to be released which will give us an inside look at one of the most fascinating people on the web.

Takei himself narrates the film and gives interviews that go far beyond his iconic character Hikaru Sulu, giving us a backstory about his childhood in a Japanese internment camp. The film also features interviews from several of the actors who worked with Takei on Star Trek.

The film will premiere on DirectTV on July 3 and will run through August 5, then will see a limited release in theaters on August 22.

“We are thrilled that our friends at DIRECTV share our enthusiasm for Jennifer’s incredible movie. We could not ask for a better partner to launch the film to homes nationwide,” said Mara Winokur, senior vice president at Stars Digital.

Takei was in the news over the weekend after he served as Celebrity Grand Marshall in the Pride Parade in Seattle, Washington. Takei married his longtime partner, Brad Altman, in 2008.

“Well 40 years ago, what seemed unimaginable, today is reality. We look forward to the day – I think this decade – when we will indeed have the United States of America,” Takei said at the event.

Rapper Macklemore was also on hand at the parade, showing his support as he rode on top of a car through the city’s streets.
