The internet is abuzz today with word that long-time Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning will be released from the team's roster. Colts President Jim Irsay is expected to announce the decision formally in a press conference March 7, at 12 PM Eastern Time.
Manning, the longtime face of the Colts and their de facto Coach on the Field, sat the entire 2011 season due to a series of neck injuries. His release today will free the Colts of a $28 million bonus owed to Manning and truncate the quarterback's remaining four-year contractual obligation. It is also expected to make Manning the NFL's most enticing free agent in a very long time.
The Colts hold the #1 draft pick for 2012, following their worst season in two decades, their first without Manning at the helm since he took the job in 1998.
