Atlético Madrid did what few would have expected merely a season ago: They laid low FC Barcelona in order to advance to the semifinals of the Champions League.

The Madrid club also leads La Liga at present, with more points than rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona. Their form has been outstanding for much of the football season, leaving some to speculate that Atlético Madrid could win both the La Liga title and the Champions League.

Is a cup double likely for the Madrid team? It’s certainly possible…but let’s not get carried away just yet.

There are still three other tough opponents that will be vying for that Champion’s League title. One of them is local rival Real Madrid. The possibility of a derby as a semifinal or as the cup final match raises exciting possibilities.

It would be an amazing match up if it happens as both teams would no doubt be inspired to bring their A-game.

It’s also possible that these teams will not meet.

The two other teams advancing are Bayern Munich and Chelsea FC.

Chelsea and Bayern Munich have history of their own: It was the English club that upset the Bundesliga side when they met in Munich, Germany in the 2012 Champions League final.

It is possible that a repeat of the shocking result is in the cards. Bayern will likely be looking to reverse their fortunes and take revenge for the humiliating defeat.

With so much bad blood in the air, Atlético Madrid’s aspirations for a cup double remain a faint hope rather than a certainty.

The same can be said for Chelsea, who in addition to competing for the Champions League cup is locked in a race with Manchester City FC and Liverpool FC for the Premier League trophy.

There is no telling how any of it will end, but it will be a finale filled with excitement and drama.
