Zooey Deschanel sat down for an interview recently with Cosmo, and the New Girl star talked about everything from the state of television to her thoughts on body image.
Deschanel spoke up about the magazine covers that show women in bikinis a month after giving birth, saying that’s not her style. The new-mom-to-be said she’s not into what the scale says and refuses to pressure herself regarding her weight, no matter what’s on Hollywood’s agenda.
“I will not be that person. I’ve always gone my own course and never been someone who had the need to be super skinny. I like a healthy look. I don’t buy into that skinny-is-better mentality. I just eat healthy and work out and don’t worry about my weight too much. Actresses aren’t models, and most of them never wanted to be,” Deschanel said.
Of course, it’s not just Hollywood contributing to the conversation about women’s bodies; Kate Middleton set the bar suuuuuper high recently when she gave birth to her little princess and then appeared outside the hospital for photographers about ten hours later, looking impossibly fresh and slender. Zooey isn’t bowing to the pressure, however, and is going to enjoy her first pregnancy without worrying about her post-baby body.
The 35-year old actress is due this summer, and the producers of New Girl changed their schedule around to accommodate for the impending delivery. That doesn’t mean she’s not still working hard, however. She says she’s always been focused when it comes to doing what she loves, and fortunately, women are having a moment on television right now.
“I’m very focused. I work all the time, but I do what I love and I don’t care what people think of it. You don’t become successful by trying to be ‘a success.’ You become successful by doing things that give you pleasure. That’s a hallmark of mine…It’s a good time for women on TV. We can be funny in our own way … and funny doesn’t mean just one thing. Funny isn’t just one-liners. It’s big personalities and individualism.”
