The amount of content that some Xbox 360 users are able to access is about to get a significant boost. Today, Microsoft and Time Warner Cable announced what they call a "landmark deal" which will put hundreds of live cable channels on the Xbox 360 for the first time.

The deal will result in TWC TV, a new Xbox 360 app that will allow Time Warner Cable customers to stream up to 300 live TV channels on their consoles. All you have to sport to be allowed in is an Xbox LIVE Gold membership and a Time Warner Cable subscription.

“TWC TV is a significant addition to Xbox 360, bringing our customers their favorite entertainment in one place - enhanced TV experience, games, movies, music, sports and entertainment apps,” said Blair Westlake, corporate vice president, Media & Entertainment Group at Microsoft. “Our partnership with TWC enhances all that is available on Xbox 360 today, which will we continue expand. We’re thrilled to offer TWC TV to U.S. Xbox Live members and Time Warner Cable subscribers.”

The new app will be fully integrated with Kinect voice control and is set to launch later this summer.

TWC and Microsoft are promoting "enhanced features" and Kinect control, but for some this will seem like paying for cable in order to stream that cable through a console. Depending on what extras (and even extra channels, possibly) the new TWC TV app brings to the table, it's left to be seen is this will be seen as a great new source of content on the Xbox 360. Of course, there's the on-demand content to factor in here.

What it is, however, is the biggest live TV streaming deal that Microsoft has ever made.

Currently, the TWC TV app is available on Roku, Apple devices, Android devices, and PC/MAC.
