A Texas couple were shocked this week when they drove to what was supposed to be their new home, only to find an empty lot.

Fort Worth demolition crews accidentally knocked down the wrong house on Monday, choosing the neighboring home to a vacated, condemned house that was supposed to be knocked down. David Underwood said that as he and his wife drove up to the property–which had belonged to his grandmother–they were astonished to find it gone.

“We came around Silver Creek looking for the lot and my wife said, David… I think the house is gone.,” said Underwood. “We looked up there and sure enough, it’s gone!”

Underwood, who had been planning on fixing up the home to move into it, said he spoke to Marshalls on the scene and got a pretty casual reaction when he told them what happened.

“As we left, I saw two city marshals on patrol and I said, ‘Hey, what happened? Somebody tore down our house’ and he goes ‘That was your house? Oops,’” Underwood said.

Underwood says there were items in the house that belonged to his grandmother–antiques and heirlooms–that he’ll never be able to replace, but the city of Fort Worth has offered him a compensation package to make up for the mistake.

“I see so much around here, people that need help and have less that, it’s an accident, let’s do what’s right and move on,” Underwood said.

The home, which was appraised at $82,000, could have been saved had the contractors listened to a neighbor, who tried to warn them they had the wrong house.
