There are a lot of things that we don’t know about the Wii U yet – the price, the launch games, the online infrastructure, boxart, etc. We can hopefully mark one of those off the list as a small publisher has just revealed what may be the final Wii U boxart design.
It was brought to our attention that a game publisher going by the name of Maximum Games updated its product page with a game called Jett Tailfin Racers. It’s obviously a casual game that is meant to appeal to children. It wouldn’t be anything worth writing about except that the game is coming out for the 3DS and Wii U and the publisher has pushed out the boxart design. Let’s take a look:
I have to say I’m a little disappointed. I guess I was hoping for something different from Nintendo this time around instead of just copying the Wii’s boxart design. Nintendo’s current losses can be partly attributed to its dedication to the casual masses that have moved on to mobile gaming. They are not coming back and tempting people with Wii-like boxart design isn’t going to work.
Granted, we should take this with a grain of salt. Sure, Maximum Games is a real publisher with some real games under its belt, but it’s not a major game publisher. This could just be placeholder art with the Wii U logo slapped on until they get final word on the real design.
Unfortunately, the boxart looks legitimate and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what we saw on Monday. I knew I had to give up hope on Nintendo changing the Wii U’s name, and I guess I’m going to to have to give up on my hopes of different boxart. Here’s hoping that Nintendo shows off some amazing titles next Tuesday to make up for it.
