I honestly don’t know how I feel about this, and I don’t think I’ve ever said that about a film.
“Vamps” is the upcoming film from Amy Heckerling, who directed “Clueless” and “Fast Times At Ridgemont High”. And as much as I adore “Clueless”, and as much Alicia Silverstone’s huge, gorgeous eyes implore me to love everything she does….ehhh. I just don’t know if I can commit to this one.
The cast is promising, too, which makes it that much more difficult for me to be ambivalent about it. Wallace Shawn (another “Clueless” alum), Kristen Ritter, Sigourney Weaver, and Malcolm McDowell all star, not to mention Dan Stevens, who plays stuffy British hottie Matthew on “Downton Abbey”, which I’m slightly obsessed with. The preview shows what appears to be a take on Heckerling’s girly sense of humor, which pokes fun at itself while lambasting cliched themes at the same time and made “Clueless” a classic. But it just seems like odd timing for a comedy about vampires, no?
Of course, I’ve learned over the years not to judge a film by the trailer alone, and I will probably give it a shot just out of some leftover teenage loyalty to Amy Heckerling. We’ll see.
