There has not been a main entry in the storied Ultima series since its ninth entry in 1999. Since then, the series has moved into the world of MMOs and online free-to-play Web-based games. Now EA has brought back the main series, but on a platform you may not have expected.

EA announced that Ultima Forever is now available for iOS. This latest entry in the franchise is a top-down cooperative action RPG for up to four players. The game also boasts a story that’s affected by the actions and choices you make throughout the game.

As the first main Ultima entry in almost 13 years, some fans are no doubt unhappy with the direction that Ultima Forever has taken. That being said, the game looks solid. The only downside is that its free-to-play with a heavy focus on in-app transactions. That alone may drive away the more hardcore player base that yearns for a mobile title to take their needs seriously.

If you want to try it out for yourself, you can download Ultima Forever for free right now from the App Store. It’s compatible with the iPhone 4 and up, and requires iOS 5.0 or higher.
