TurboTax is sending out payout checks as part of a $141 million settlement with all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Under US law, individuals making less than $69,000 are eligible to file their taxes free. Unfortunately, TurboTax parent Intuit has been accused of ‘scamming scam American taxpayers into paying for services that should be free.’

Multiple states sued the company, winning a $141 million settlement for its behavior, and Intuit is now sending out those settlement checks.

“TurboTax’s predatory and deceptive marketing cheated millions of low-income Americans who were trying to fulfill their legal duties to file their taxes,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James. “Today we are righting that wrong and putting money back into the pockets of hardworking taxpayers who should have never paid to file their taxes. I thank my fellow attorneys general for their partnership in this effort to stand up for ordinary Americans and hold companies who cheat consumers accountable.”

Roughly 4.4 million Americans will be receiving checks, averaging $29 – $30 each. Impacted consumers can find more information here.
