Tish Cyrus, mom to pop star Miley, got quite a shock when her daughter was 14; as Miley told Paper Magazine for their latest issue, she revealed to her mother back then that she was attracted to girls as well as boys, and it was a difficult thing for Tish to accept.

Miley opened up about talking to her mom as a teen and telling her how she felt, and while Tish didn’t fully understand, Miley says she was supportive.

“I remember telling her I admire women in a different way. And she asked me what that meant. And I said, I love them. I love them like I love boys. And it was so hard for her to understand. She didn’t want me to be judged and she didn’t want me to go to hell. But she believes in me more than she believes in any god. I just asked for her to accept me. And she has,” Miley said.

Cyrus has made headlines over the past couple of years for her penchant for nudity and her highly sexually-charged songs and stage performances–including one at the MTV VMAs with Robin Thicke that had people talking for months in 2013–but has said in the past that she’s just being herself. She said after the VMAs performance that she couldn’t believe people were still talking about it.

“What’s amazing is I think now, we’re three days later and people are still talking about it. They’re over thinking it. You’re thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it. Like, I didn’t even think about it, because that’s just me,” she said.

Miley Cyrus confirmed that she is attracted to both sexes in the Paper interview, saying as long as the other person is of age and is willing to try new things, she’s open to just about anything. Tish Cyrus has not commented on the article.

“Everything that’s legal, I’m down with. Yo, I’m down with any adult — anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me. I don’t relate to being boy or girl, and I don’t have to have my partner relate to boy or girl.”
