007 has seen some incredibly interesting incarnations over the years, including the more recent hit experienced with the blockbuster that is Skyfall. Timothy Olyphant, of Justified fame, was rumored to be the next Bond in the upcoming James Bond 24 film, and when questioned about the rumors, had some candid insight to his version of the famous character, with his most candid idea being to help Bond “chill out” with a bit of weed.

Olyphant claimed in an interview with Conan that he would take a rather unique spin on the classic character, saying he would go by “James Bong” and smoke marijuana. The joke sprung from Olyphant talking about his desire to change up the accent typically used by Bond actors when portraying the character. He went on to say, “I could do an accent if it’s absolutely necessary, I mean, I don’t want to lose the job right here…. I think the key, though, it that he needs to be a little more chill, a little more like… I think he should smoke weed. The last guy drank Heineken, it used to be martinis and bow ties, now he’s drinking beers and I think the natural progression is… you know. Bong. Internet hype is mostly to blame for the abundant rumors of Olyphant starring as the next James Bond. The rumors were so accepted that Olyphant was even publicly congratulated for the role, though he managed to “dodge the bullet” and denied any congratulations.

In actuality, the upcoming film will feature Daniel Craig as the latest Bond. Skyfall director Sam Mendes will be returning to the same role. Ralph Fiennes will also return as M, Naomie Harris as Moneypenny, and Ben Whishaw as Q. Neither the actors or role for the new villian and “Bond girl” have been revealed as of yet, but it’s probably safe to say that Olyphant won’t be involved, at least not in this film. It seems that the public will have to wait a while before they get their pot-smoking Bond. (Perhaps in the 420th film?)
