The Last of Us debuted in June to near-universal positive reviews. The game’s stealth-action gameplay and dark, mature story resonated with game reviewers in a way few games have in the recent past. Now, it seems that these same qualities have also resonated with PlayStation 3 gamers.

The game reportedly sold around 1.3 million copies during its first week and 500,000 copies during its first weekend, making more money that blockbuster movie Man of Steel. Sony announced today that 3.4 million copies of The Last of Us have been sold, as of July 3 – an impressive number for a console-exclusive title that isn’t Halo. The figure combines disc-based retail sales and PlayStation Network downloads of the title. Theses sales numbers, according to Sony, make The Last of Us the fastest-selling PlayStation 3 game of this year.

“These sales figures are a testament to the blockbuster quality of The Last of Us,” said Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios. “The teams at Naughty Dog are true visionaries and their storytelling capabilities are second to none, this title is an undisputed demonstration of that. SCE continues to be committed to delivering unique gameplay experiences that redefine the interactive entertainment industry and The Last of Us is a perfect example.”

Sony is still heavily promoting The Last of Us, almost one month on from its release. Most recently, a new developer diary video was released discussing the nuances of combat in the game.
