I think it’s safe to assume that we’ve all seen the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer that aired over Thanksgiving weekend. If not, you should really check it out. It’s only a small snippet, but it really feels like we’re returning to the kind of Star Wars film we haven’t seen since Return of the Jedi. Of course, you might wonder what the creator of Star Wars – George Lucas – thinks of the trailer. As it turns out, he hasn’t seen it and he says he won’t watch it.
Wait, George Lucas won’t watch the trailer to see if Star Wars is in good hands? I mean, I would want to know if the person taking over my life’s work was paying proper tribute to it. Before you start thinking that Lucas is a jerk, know that he has the noblest of intentions. Speaking to The New York Post, he says that he prefers to see films in theater. In other words, he doesn’t want to see any part of the film until it’s completed and in theaters. As a filmmaker, it does make sense for him to have a different sense about these things than the rest of us.
Well, surely he must have faith that Abrams can do a good job with the franchise, right? He told the NY Post that he wasn’t really interested in seeing what the Star Trek director would do with Star Wars. It’s hard to tell if Lucas is either disinterested or if he just feels that this is Abram’s film. If it’s the latter, he may feel that what he says won’t matter as it’s now in the hands of somebody else.
If it was his movie, it may have ended up like this:
Thankfully, we’re getting something a little more subtle:
All joking aside, we’ll find out what Lucas thinks of The Force Awakens when the film hits theaters on December 18 next year.
