Though deaths rarely occur as a result of playground activity, tragic reminders sometimes pop up to remind us that injuries can happen, and that some of them can be fatal.

This week, a San Diego-area high school student died after being hit by a softball during a P.E. class.

According to a report from San Diego news station ABC 10, 16-year-old Taylor Dorman was playing a game called “over-the-line” during his P.E. class at Ramona High School on Wednesday when he was hit in the chest with a softball. Though the teen laughed off the injury, he collapsed 20 minutes later.

Dorman was taken to a local hospital, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit. His heartbeat was reportedly irregular, and doctors were unable to stabilize it. Dorman was pronounced dead on Wednesday, April 10, which also happened to be his 16th birthday.

Students at the high school held a candlelight vigil Wednesday evening, during which they released birthday balloons for the teen.
