A teenage girl made the find of a lifetime this week at the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas. 14 year old Tana Clymer of Oklahoma City was visiting the park with her family when she decided to spend a few hours digging in the dirt. Her time spent digging paid off tremendously when she discovered a huge 3.85-carat canary diamond that is teardrop-shaped and about the size of a jellybean.

The teen said that when she first saw the diamond sparkling underneath a thin layer of dirt, she thought it was a candy wrapper or even a marble. When she dug it up, she quickly realized she had found something special.

“I was about to sprint to join my family,” says Tana, “and God told me to slow down and look. Then, I found the diamond!”

Tana is not the first person to dig up a diamond at the crater. In fact, over 75,000 diamonds have been found in the park since 1906. The best part, diggers get to keep whateever they find in the park.

So what is a 14 year old girl to do with such a large diamond? She says she will either have it mounted in a ring so she can wear it and show it off or sell it and use the money to pay for college. It has yet to be appraised.

“Tana told me that she was so excited, she couldn’t sleep last night,” Bill Henderson, assistant park superintendent said Sunday. “She’s either going to keep the diamond for a ring, or, if it’s worth a lot, she’ll want that for college.”

Most of the diamonds found in the park are discovered close to the surface. Park officials say that heavy rain has been known to push the dirt away and make the gems easier to find. Tana’s find is the 396th diamond found so far this year at the park.
