Obsidian entertainment and the creators of South Park have officially announced the long anticipated South Park RPG at this year’s E3. The RPG is dubbed The Stick of Truth, and will be released on March 5, 2013.
The announcement took place during Microsoft’s E3 press conference, which saw the introduction of new games and new concepts in gaming. Fans were thrilled to see new footage of Tomb Raider, Black Ops 2, and Resident Evil 6. But one thing that stuck out in our minds, and apparently Trey Parker’s, was Microsoft’s SmartGlass. He made fun of the concept in his presentation, which followed SmartGlass’ announcement:
“How many times have you been watching an episode of South Park and thought, ‘I’d like to watch this on my television, while hooked into my mobile device, which is being controlled by my tablet device, which is hooked into my oven, all while sitting in the refrigerator. Well, we’re not doing that. We’re just doing this game. It’s an RPG.”
The RPG looks exactly like watching an episode of South Park unfold in front of you, except you are they main character. The game will allow you to create a unique avatar to represent you in the game as “the new kid”, the hero of the story.
“To make the game feel like [you are in an episode of South Park], it has to look right,” Matt Stone said during the presentation. “It has to look like an episode of South Park … which is pretty crappy.”
Crappy or no, Obsidian has delivered on making the game look exactly like an episode of South Park.
To make the game seem real, Parker and Stone had to actually map out the full town of South Park. The show often cuts to each of the characters homes, but until now, even Stone and Parker didn’t know where they stood in relation to each other. This will be a fun way for fans to discover more about the South Park universe.
“The funny part is, we were writing it, and saying, ‘Maybe you’re here and you go to Stan’s house to Kyle’s house,” Parker said. “And after fifteen years of doing the show, it was the first time that Matt and I were, like, ‘Where is Kyle’s house?’”
It’s too bad we’re going to have to wait a year to play, but it looks worth it. Check out more of Microsoft’s E3 press conference here.
