For months now gamers have been anticipating the launch of the PlayStation 4 and on Friday those same fans were finally able to get their hands on Sony’s new console. Sony’s confident marketing and lack of PlayStation-related scandals managed to make the PS4 highly desired among gamers, and the company this week has revealed just how that good will has translated into sales.
Sony has announced that it sold over one million PlayStation 4 consoles to customers on its launch day. Though this figure represents PS4 consoles sold just in North America, it represents the biggest console launch day in the history of the industry. The PS4 will be launching in dozens of other countries in the coming weeks, putting it on-track for the largest console launch month ever.
“PS4 was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal,” said Andrew House, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment. “Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29. We are extremely grateful for the passion of PlayStation fans and thank them for their continued support.”
Microsoft will now get its chance to match Sony’s feat with its launch of the Xbox One console this Friday. Unlike Sony, Microsoft’s marketing of the Xbox One this year has been plagued with bad press due to the company’s original plan to implement hardware-level DRM on the console, its targeting of a wider TV-friendly audience, and lower hardware specs coupled with a higher price when compared to the PS4. Though consumer backlash caused Microsoft to ditch its DRM plans, it remains to be seen whether these other factors will negatively affect the Xbox One at launch.
