Aaron Hernandez, the former NFL player who was recently charged with murder, won’t be getting married anytime soon if the sheriff has anything to say about it.
Hernandez pleaded not-guilty last week in the murder charge leveled against him for the execution-style slaying of Odin Lloyd, and his girlfriend–and mother to his 7-month old daughter–was cooperative with police until Hernandez allegedly told her to keep quiet. Now, officials are worried that a marriage will mean they won’t be able to get her to testify against Hernandez.
Shayanna Jenkins was allegedly involved in a domestic dispute with Hernandez last year but never filed charges, and there is always the worry that Hernandez will intimidate Jenkins into backing him up, especially if she becomes his wife. Now, the Bristol County Sheriff says he will do everything in his power not to let a wedding happen.
“I don’t subscribe to that. I feel that those rights are things that you access on the outside, if you’re a good citizen,” Hodgson told USA Today. “We’ll do everything we can to not have that happen. We’re not going to revamp our entire security system to perform marriages inside our prison. If you want to get married, what you do is, you stay out of jail.”
Hernandez is currently being held without bail at the Bristol County Jail in a private cell; however, it’s likely he’ll be moved to gen pop soon, as officials are adamant about treating him like a normal prisoner rather than giving him special treatment because of his sports status.
