Last week, Jerry Seinfeld confirmed on a radio show that there would be a “Seinfeld” reunion coming up, and although he was very hazy on the details to give it an air of mystery, fans of the show were excited at the prospect. But when a commercial aired during the Super Bowl that brought together Jerry, Jason Alexander, and Wayne Knight, audiences were a tad disappointed.

Seinfeld appeared on “The Boomer and Carton Show” on Thursday and answered a few questions about the reunion, but he wouldn’t say definitively what it was all about. When asked whether it was a Super Bowl commercial or for his show “Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee”, he said no.

“It’s not not those things, either. It’s a secret project,” he said. “I gave you more now than I’ve given anyone. I told you what it isn’t. And then I also told you that it isn’t not that, either.”

Apparently Seinfeld was being vague because it was both of those things. The ad featured Jerry and George walking into Tom’s Restaurant–the real-life diner that served as the exterior for the restaurant favored by the characters on the show–and then having a very typical George/Jerry conversation. They were eventually interrupted by Newman, who was picking up treats for the Super Bowl. While it was fun seeing the characters together again, many people on Twitter say it just wasn’t funny.

According to Seinfeld, he was approached to do the bit by FOX a while back and loved the idea.

“FOX approached (Seinfeld co-creator) Larry (David) and me about doing some kind of Seinfeld reunion for the halftime broadcast because of the New York connection. So we thought throwing Jerry, George and Newman into a Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee was a fun way to do it. Larry and I wrote the script in one sitting, just like old times, and working with him, Jason and Wayne was a total blast as it always was,” Seinfeld said.

Despite some fans who thought the ad was a let-down, many were still happy just to see some of their favorite characters together in one place again. You can watch the rest of the reunion here.
