  • Sandra Oh’s brilliant portrayal of Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy is so remarkable that it’s difficult to distinguish character from actress. Sandra’s impressive credentials include five Emmy nominations and one Golden Globe award.

So, it should come as no surprise that the fans of the show are upset by the recent news that Sandra will complete her final year as the beloved surgeon on the ABC show, leaving in 2014.

Sandra Oh released the following statement:

“It’s been a great privilege to play the character of Cristina Yang on GA and I am both sad and excited to see where this, her final season will take her. It was an emotional and deeply creative decision for me and I feel fully supported by Shonda and the writers. It’s so rare in an actor’s life to be able to explore and grow a character so fully, so completely. I am profoundly grateful to everyone at GA for the opportunity.”

The creator of the series, Shonda Rimes, returned the supportive comments by adding, “One of the best days of my life as a writer happened the day Sandra Oh walked in my door to audition and forever changed the course of Grey’s Anatomy with her brilliant, nuanced portrayal of Cristina Yang.”

While the universal appreciation of an actor’s work is rare to find it seems in this case that the world is saddened by the exit of Cristina Yang. Comfort should be given knowing that Sandra Oh gave the viewers of the ABC hit series ten remarkable years.
