Samonsite scare: A local consumer group in Hong Kong has claimed that the handles used in the company’s Tokyo Chic line of luggage contains high levels of a chemical that may cause cancer. As a result, Samsonite International has pulled the products in-question from retail shelves. However, according to a spokesperson for the suitcase manufacturer, that an independent test of their handles indicated that their bags were, in fact, safe for use.

“The company’s independent test results found PAH levels that were significantly lower than those reported by the Consumer Council,” the company said in a statement. “The company continually monitors applicable legal requirements and strives to ensure that its products meet not only legal standards but also the highest standards of product quality and safety.”

According to the AFP, the Hong Kong Consumer Council released a report last week stating that the side handles for Samsonite’s Tokyo Chic line contained high levels of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH), a chemical that has been linked to cancer. As a result, Customs and Excise Department recommended that sales of suitcases should cease until the handles have been properly replaced.

As a result, the company has pulled the line from Hong Kong retailers. Additionally, the company has stated they intend to replace the side handles with a “next-generation handle” to calm the fears of consumers.
