Rupert Murdoch, who is no stranger to controversy, recently used social media to spark a big conversation about Scientology and whether or not it should be called a “cult”.

The whole thing started with the breakup heard ’round the world on Friday, as news of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ divorce broke open and spilled across the internet. Cruise, who is famously devoted to Scientology, even had Katie give birth to their daughter Suri under Scientology rules, which demanded absolute quiet in the birthing room, among other things. NYDailyNews recently reported that a group of suspicious men were spotted hanging out in an Escalade just outside Holmes’ apartment after the divorce story got out, and TMZ is saying the men were sent from the Church of Scientology to keep tabs on her. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but the men refused to answer questions about why they were there, which sparked numerous rumors.

Murdoch is of the opinion that the Church of Scientology is full of “evil, creepy” people and that they should be viewed as a cult. He tweeted his thoughts on the religion on Sunday, which sparked some outrage and started a long thread of Twitter responses.

Since those tweets, he’s said he’s had hundreds of attacks for speaking out about Scientology and expects more, but will stick to his original opinion on the matter.
