Rooney Mara and Ben Mendelsohn co-star in an upcoming dark, romance-drama, Blackbird.

Mara and Mendelsohn play two former lovers who reunite after a fifteen year separation. Blackbird is the screen-adaptation of the award winning David Harrower’s 2005 play. It was the 2007 recipient of the Oliver Award for best new play.

Jean Doumanian and Patrick Daly are set to produce Blackbird. Acclaimed theater director Benedict Andrews will make his film directorial debut with this film. During the summer, filming of Blackbird begins in the U.K.

In the play, Ray (Mendelsohn) is a 55 year old man who comes face-to-face with Una, a 27-year-old woman who he had an affair with when he was 40 and she was 12. Ray was arrested and imprisoned for his crimes. Once released, he established a relatively successful new life.

Then Una encounters him at work. The majority of the play takes place in an office break room. Ray brings Una there to hash out what happened between them. Una struggles to make sense of their affair. She shifts between emotions of anger, confusion, and curiosity. Whether Una wants closure, revenge, or to continue their affair is unclear.

Mara has several films in the pre and post-production phases of filming. These films are the Untitled Terrence Malick Project, Carol, and The Secret Scripture. Mara also has a role in the highly anticipated Joe Wright adaptation of Peter Pan, called Pan.

She will also once again take on the role of Lisbeth Salander in The Girl Who Played with Fire.

Mara rounds out her busy filming schedule by starring in an original musical called Ziggy with Dane DeHaan.

Mendelsohn is currently shooting for his lead role in the new Netflix series Bloodline. He also has several film projects expected for release this year and next year. They are Exodus: Gods and Kings, Black Sea, The Adventures of Beatle, and Mississippi Grind.
