Ronda Rousey suffered a harsh upset over the weekend when she was defeated for the first time in her MMA career by Holly Holm, and immediately afterward it seemed the Web was full of memes, criticism, and jokes at Rousey’s expense. Now, an unlikely person is coming forward in her defense.
Floyd Mayweather–who at one time had something of a trash-talking rivalry with Rousey–said in an interview with FightHype.com that he’s proud of Rousey, and he doesn’t think it’s okay for her to be the butt of jokes after just one loss.
“I don’t think it’s cool how everyone is trolling her on social media. Certain things you have to learn. People will love you on Friday, and then Sunday morning, it’s nothing but negative comments and people making jokes and people making fun about you, which I don’t think is cool…I’m proud of the new girl, Holly, and I’m proud of Ronda,” Mayweather said.
Ronda Rousey has risen extremely high in a short amount of time, which Mayweather pointed out, and she took to social media after the fight to let her legion of fans know she was alright after being knocked out by a kick to the face. The outcome of the fight left fans and even announcers in shock, but some are attributing Rousey’s loss to her anger; after her weigh-in with Holm–where the two scuffled–Rousey took to Twitter to call out her opponent for taking a “cheap shot” and later came into the ring with what an L.A. Times reporter called a “wild” fighting style.
No matter what caused Rousey’s loss, Holly Holms says she is totally down for a rematch because she feels Ronda deserves it. The undefeated boxer and UFC fighter said after the match that she understands what a loss feels like, and the accompanying feelings of wanting to avenge it.
“I think a rematch makes sense for sure. I’ve been on the losing side of a fight and I wanted the rematch, I wanted to avenge my loss. With a champion like Ronda – who has gone out of her way, above and beyond, to do great things – absolutely she deserves a rematch. I don’t look at this belt and think I’ve made it. I think I still have things that I need to do. I think a rematch, I think that’s kind of unspoken common sense to me,” Holm said.
