If you want to find a perfect male teen icon from the 80s, you don’t have to look any further than actor Rob Lowe.

Lowe, who turns 50 years old today, was an ultimate member of the Brat Pack along with Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy.

Members of the teen-oriented group appeared together in films such as The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo’s Fire.

Lowe released his first memoir, Stories I Only Tell My Friends, in 2011, full of wild stories of his youth. But, apparently, The West Wing actor has more to tell. His new book, Love Life, includes stories about marriage, parenting, the hot tub at the Playboy Mansion, playing saxophone for President Bill Clinton, and missing his chance to hook up with superstar singer, Madonna.

After the Material Girl’s 1984 concert in L.A., she invited Lowe backstage.

“She had flawless skin and eyes that imparted secrets…she asked what I was working on and I told her a bit about St. Elmo’s Fire, which I had just finished. ‘I play the bad boy,’ I said. Madonna just smiled. She seemed to like that,” the book reads.

Months later the two met up at the Palladium nightclub in Hollywood, a “giant dance club that was filled with rabid ‘boy-toy’ doppelganger fans of both sexes.”

Lowe and Madonna were sitting talking about what to do at the end of their date (ahem) when she jumped up and said, “Let’s dance!” Lowe declined, saying he would wait there for her, and teased her causing her “crazy.”

“‘No I’m not,” she said defensively. “I’m just not going to let success f–k up my fun.”

And that was that. Madonna – 1, Rob Lowe – 0.

But Lowe shouldn’t have too much regret. He had plenty of fun with other females in the 80s including Melissa Gilbert of Little House on the Prairie fame, German actress Nastassja Kinski, and Princess Stéphanie of Monaco.

Lowe was also involved in a controversial sex tape scandal in 1988 when he videotaped himself having sex with two women, ages 16 and 22, in a hotel at the Democratic National Convention. The second part of the tape, which was one of the first commercially available sex tapes to be sold, showed he and friend Justin Moritt having sex in a Paris hotel room with an American model named Jennifer.

The scandal ruined his image, but Lowe later recovered, mocking himself on Saturday Night Live and appearing in the 90s comedy Wayne’s World. He also appeared in other comedies such as Tommy Boy, and the Austin Powers trilogy.

Lowe’s recent book, Love Life, appears on bookshelves on April 8.
