Randy Travis has been released from a Texas hospital after congestive heart failure caused a heart attack in early July.

The country star suffers from viral cardiomyopathy, a disease that weakens the heart, and also suffered a stroke while in the hospital after doctors performed surgery to ease the swelling in his brain. Cardiomyopathy causes the heart to pump blood much more slowly than a healthy organ, so Travis has had a device put in that regulates blood flow. He is currently in the care of a physical therapy center.

His fiancee, Mary Davis, released a statement thanking fans for their support during such a difficult time.

“Thanks to all the fans and friends for your continued prayers and support as Randy continues on the road to recovery,” she said.

Travis has had a rough year; in 2012 he was arrested for assault after fighting in a church parking lot (twice), and was injured in a car accident near his Texas home after driving drunk. Around that same time, he was spotted walking naked into a gas station to buy cigarettes while highly intoxicated.

Travis saw his country career take off in the ’80s and early ’90s, but it went into a slow decline after that. He did, however, make a comeback with a gospel album that won him Song Of The Year in 2003 from both the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music.
