  • When the PS4 first launched, the system only supported wired headsets. It was a major disappointment for PS3 owners hoping their $100 wireless headset would be supported out of the box. It wasn’t like Sony just killed support though – it promised that it would update the PS4 firmware in early 2014 to include support. January came and gone without a peep, but now Sony is finally giving audiophiles what they want.

Sony announced this morning that the PS4 will be getting system software update version 1.60 tonight which adds support for both the PULSE and PULSE- Elite Edition wireless headsets. PS4 gamers can finally enjoy 7.1 virtual surround sound that the PULSE headsets provide.

If you don’t have a PULSE headset, Sony will also be releasing the PlayStation Gold Wireless Headset early this month to take advantage of the new update. The new headset features 7.1 virtual surround sound, a noise-canceling microphone, customizable faceplates and even custom audio modes built for specific games. For example, the guys at Sucker Punch will be building a custom audio profile for inFamous: Second Son for use with the headset.

Here’s a quick video of the headset in action:

Sony says the Gold headset can connect to the PS4, PS3 or PC through a wireless adapter and can remain active for 8 hours before needing to recharge. It can also connect to a mobile device through its included 3.5mm audio cable adapter. It will retail for $99 when it launches early this month.
