According to Florida lottery officials, there was a $16 million Powerball ticket sold in May that has still not been claimed. Powerball tickets have to be turned in for their winnings 180 days from the date of the drawing, and yesterday was the expiration day for the May 25 drawing. The ticket was sold at the Carollwood Market in Tampa, Florida and the winning numbers were 2, 6, 19, 21, 27 and a Powerball of 25.

The ticket was one of three winning tickets, with the other tickets sold in Delaware and Louisiana. The three winners had to split the total jackpot amount of $50 million. “It’s here, we’re ready to give it to the rightful owner,” said David Bishop, who is a spokesman for the Florida Lottery. “We want to give the money away.”

As far as we know, no one turned in the winning ticket, and it will now be considered expired. So what happens to all of that money? Florida officials say a large sum will go into Florida’s education programs, $25,000 will be given to the store who sold the ticket, and 20 percent will role over into the next drawing.

The Powerball is drawn every Wednesday and Saturday night at 10:59 p.m. Five white balls are drawn from a pool of 59 balls and one red ball out of pool of 35 red balls. If you were to match all six numbers, which is highly unlikely considering the odds of winning are 1 in 175,223,510.00, you would win the jackpot. The current estimated jackpot is $50 million with a $28.2 million cash value.
