It’s nearly October, and studios are readying their chosen horror flicks for the Halloween movie season (the rest get dumped on theaters in February and March). With Insidious 2 already proving that Americans are ready for horror again and Pacific Rim bringing back giant monster movies, a low-budget movie called Big Ass Spider just might end up being the Snakes on a Plane phenomenon of 2013.

The movie is almost exactly what it says on the tin, with a giant spider infiltrating a city and terrorizing its citizens. The flick is directed by Mike Mendez, the director of the 2006 After Dark Horrorfest movie The Gravedancers. It also stars Greg Grunberg (Matt Parkman from Heroes) as an exterminator.

Though the movie’s description would imply an abundance of gore, Big Ass Spider is, oddly, rated PG-13. This places it more in-line with SyFy horror movie specials such as Sharknado, rather than big-budget torture-porn. The new trailer for the flick, out this week, shows just how silly the movie gets:

Big Ass Spider is, as many other low-budget movies these days are, is going the video-on-demand (VOD) route to hit more viewers around the U.S. The movie will be in theaters and VOD starting October 18.
