The original saw numberous iterations, each adding some kind of gimmick to make consumers dive into their pockets every few months, for a new DS system. The original came in many different packages including the DS lite, DSi and DS XL. And the 3DS, but Nintendo contends that the 3DS is a next gen device.

Now Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto is saying that Nintendo is done with the 3DS for now, and is aiming its sights on a next generation portable device. So this current next generation device, the 3DS, is not likely to see any new “improved” releases. That’s right. No 3DSi, no 3DS XL, no 3DSi lite XL. (That last one I would like to see.)

Miyamoto made his feelings clear in the latest interview with IGN: “I really feel like I’m satisfied with the 3DS hardware as it is. I feel like it’s the best for this generation. What we’re thinking about right now is probably going to be for a future generation of handheld.”

He goes on to say that there is still a lot that can be done with the current hardware. In other words, not all of the aspects of 3D portable gaming have been explored. This could be true, although I’m not sure what avenues he might be thinking of in term of innovation. There are lots of games we would like to see get a 3D portable revamp, but 3D is 3D. Seems pretty straight forward.

One DS model that we should have seen is one that included a second circle pad — similar to the Playstation Vita. It is hard to wonder why something so intuitive was left out of the multiple DS releases over the years. According to Miyamoto, the system’s gyroscope fulfills that need. Right.
