Today is that most American of minor holidays: National Donut Day. Donut retailers across the country today are giving away their fried bread treats to celebrate the 76th annual holiday.
Krispy Kreme, once again, is offering the most open donut giveaway. Any person can receive one free donut, with no purchase necessary.

Dunkin’ Donuts will also be giving away one free donut per person, but only so long as they also purchase a beverage.

Tim Hortons is getting in on the free donut action this year too. Like Dunkin’ Donuts, anyone who wants a free donut will also have to purchase something else. However, Tim Hortons has gone one step further and made the offer only good for those who print off a coupon from the Tim Hortons Facebook page.
The Salvation Army claims to have started National Donut Day to honor their “donut girls,” who served the glazed treats to soldiers in Europe during World War I. The organization is working with Entenmann’s Bakery this year, which is donating $1 to the Salvation Army for every “Like” the Entenmann’s Facebook page gets today (up to $30,000).
