Natalie Dormer takes on another complex female role as Cressida in the final Hunger Games movies.
Her Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2 role required her to take on a new look, one tougher and edgier than most of her previous ones. Dormer shaved off a side of her hair to really capture the Cressida look envisioned for the films. Recently the Hunger Games beauty spoke to the British Glamour. She revealed how she has adapted to the new hairstyle.
“Now it’s a little more tufty, I’m thinking about keeping it. When I went to Comic Con, so many of the girls – if they weren’t sporting the undercut – had the pretend undercut by plaiting it on one side really tight,” said Dormer.
Originally Dormer feared that her hairdo would be even more drastic. “When they offered me the role they asked me if I would consider shaving my entire head. Ultimately, the director, Francis Lawrence, and I decided Cressida would look funkier, more Capitol, which is where she comes from, if she rocked the half-shaved head look instead. So I got away lightly. But in the winter, it was bloody cold,” she said with a laugh.
Lionsgate recently released a new clip from the film. The clip highlights Dormer as Cressida. In the clip, Cressida introduces Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) to her supporters. These rebels will help Katniss in her revolt against the Capital.
Dormer is best known for playing Margaery Tyrell on Game of Thrones and Anne Boleyn on The Tudors. These two female characters don’t fall into stereotypical ideas of female heroes or villains. She has made a career out of taking on powerful, complex women roles. Dormer graced the cover of the December issue of Flare.
She talked about how the general public seems to praise male antiheroes but dislike female ones. Dormer told the magazine that, “We don’t have enough young, female antiheroes. We don’t accept women as antiheroes the way we do the men. Unless there’s a family get-out clause.”
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 hits theaters on Nov. 21.
