A couple has been formally charged in the kidnapping and murder of missing South Carolina student Heather Elvis, who hasn’t been seen since December 17.
Sidney and Tammy Moorer were arrested on Friday and charged with kidnapping and obstruction of justice after police say Tammy Moorer gave them misinformation about her knowledge of Elvis and Sidney’s whereabouts on the night she disappeared. Elvis’ car was found abandoned two days after she was last seen near the Waccamaw River, although a body has not been found.
The 20-year old student was last heard from in the early morning hours of December 18, and her family has been searching extensively for her ever since.
“Her car was parked where it shouldn’t be, she was nowhere to be found, it was locked and no one was answering her phone,” her father, Terry Elvis, said. “Of course, we wanted to pull our hair out.”
It’s unclear how Sidney Moorer might have known Elvis, but his attorney says his client is innocent of the charges and that his name will be cleared.
“Sidney has no connection to, nor knowledge of, any facts surrounding the disappearance of Heather Elvis,” T. Kirk Truslow said in a statement. “I firmly believe Sidney will be completely exonerated.”
A bond hearing regarding the murder charges will be held in March.
