Miley Cyrus VMA Hosting Gig Upsets Parents Group

Miley Cyrus turned some heads and launched herself into the depths of weirdness and depravity with her 2013 MTV Video Music Awards appearance. You may recall Miley’s onstage humping around with Robin Thicke during his performance of “We Can’t Stop” and “Blurred Lines.”

The Parents Television Council remembers. And now that Miley Cyrus has been asked to host this year’s VMA ceremony, the group is sounding off about just how bad it could be.

“MTV’s choice of Miley Cyrus as host for its annual Video Music Awards show makes clear the network’s intentions as to what kind of program it intends to air,” PTC president Tim Winter said.

“It’s not going to be safe for children to watch. So, they must rate it TV-MA. With Miley’s shtick, it’s probably going to be very edgy, very profane, very sexually explicit,” Winter warned.

The PTC insists that Miley’s bump-and-grind from 2013 is all the proof they need to sound the warning that this year’s VMA ceremony will be just too lurid for teen eyes.

“As a parent of a teenager, the content from two years ago was clearly not appropriate for a 14-year-old. I think last year’s was toned down quite a bit. This year, clearly, they’re going to try to ramp it back up again. And based on everything we’ve seen Miley doing in recent years, she certainly seems angry and certainly seems enjoying being the provocateur.”

To top it off, Miley’s announcement about her upcoming hosting duties have also alarmed the parents’ group.

“She’s dropping F-bombs in her announcement on social media, which isn’t unusual, but it tees up the kind of content,” says Winter.

The PTC recognizes that Miley Cyrus is a draw expressly because she is controversial.

“This all comes down to dollars. For many, many years, the MTV Awards show has been one of their tent-posts on the programming schedule. It usually has some sort of controversial content in it, and I think at this point in time, people can expect that.”

The PTC asks that MTV rate its show as TV-MA, based on what they expect Miley Cyrus to do.

“Don’t show explicit content and rate it as appropriate for children.”
