According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, Microsoft has acquired id8 Group R2 Studios Inc. for an unknown price. The company, in addition to Apple and Google had reportedly been in talks with R2 Studios last year.
id8 Group R2 Studios, which was created by Sling Media founder Blake Krikorian, has a product available in Google Play called R2 Control for Crestron (pictured), which turns an Android device into “a fully functional Crestron touchpanel”.
“R2 enables residential and commercial customers to control AV, lighting, thermostats, security systems, and thousands of other products via their Android device from anywhere in the world,” the description says.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft intends to beef up its Xbox unit with the acquisition, which should mean some very interesting developments from the gaming console. R2 has reportedly been working on technology “related to distributing and displaying digital media on TVs”.
Perhaps controlling your lighting, thermostats, security systems, etc. with your Xbox isn’t out of the question either.
