Meta now lets AI agents handle most of the setup work for WhatsApp Business messaging. On Sept. 15 the company announced WhatsApp Business Tools MCP, a Model Context Protocol server that connects AI coding agents such as Claude, Cursor, Codex and ChatGPT directly to the WhatsApp Business Platform.
Before this, developers had to switch between Meta’s Developer Console, Business Manager, the API reference and their own code editor. Now they can describe the setup they want to their agent, TechCrunch reported. Meta itself admitted that WhatsApp Business onboarding had become unnecessarily fragmented.
What the agent can do
Meta says the agent can create a WhatsApp Business Account, add and verify a phone number, register it for the Cloud API and review the required WhatsApp Terms of Service. It can also spot gaps that often cause setups to fail without warning, like a missing payment method or incomplete Business Verification.
Developers can describe a message template and have the agent create it, edit existing templates and report on approval status. The agent can also send test messages and configure webhooks, including callback URLs and field subscriptions, to check that an integration works, Mint reported.
Guardrails and limits
Users sign in through Facebook Login for Business and grant specific permissions. The server acts only on the businesses and apps a user administers and selected during consent. Changes to account settings require an authenticated person, and every tool call is logged.
Meta says the server is for development and testing, not for sending production messages at scale. It is rolling out gradually, isn’t available to everyone yet, and Meta is asking for feedback. It works alongside Meta’s existing Meta Social Technologies MCP, which helps developers find Graph API endpoints, search documentation and troubleshoot errors. Meta recommends using the two together.
Meta joins a growing list of companies, including PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce and Atlassian, that offer MCP servers so AI agents can work with their services directly.
