Mazzy Star fans–and that definitely includes me–will be elated to learn that the band is gearing up to release their first studio album in 17 years this September, and have given us a sample called “California”.
The band was a staple of the ’90s music scene, far removed from the grunge sound that became the epitome of the early years of that decade yet rooted in the female-fronted movement that emerged at that time. Singer Hope Sandoval’s dreamy voice is perfect against the haunting backdrop of acoustic guitars and the soft patter of hands on drums, just folksy enough to get in during the sound’s revival (with bands like Mumford & Sons and Fleet Foxes leading the way) but still staying true to the music that opened doors for them early on. If you’re a fan of Beach House, you’ll dig them.
The new album, “Seasons Of Your Day”, split recording time between L.A.–the band’s hometown–and Norway, with Colm Ó Cíosóig of My Bloody Valentine making a guest appearance. All the original band members came back to create it, lending to the authentic sound the advance track has.
If you don’t remember the band or only know them from their sleeper hit “Fade Into You”, do yourself a favor and check them out. Preferably while relaxing with a glass of wine.
