Burger King recently unveiled their new menu–which is a lot like the one McDonald’s has had for a while now–in an attempt to up their sales after being outshined by rivals McD’s and Wendy’s. Part of the upgrade is what the company calls “healthier food choices” and they’ve hired a slew of famous faces to sell them…including Mary J. Blige, whose ad for the burger joint didn’t go over so well with consumers when it began making rounds on the web.
In an open letter to Blige, Renay Alize of Madame Noire suggested that while the singer is amazing at what she does, perhaps lending her voice to a song about chicken only contributes to a harmful stereotype.
“This is so beneath you,” Alize writes. “This harmonizing about chicken is a move I would associate with someone whose glory days were far behind them. You still have so much more to contribute to the arts and entertainment game that there was no reason for you to stoop to stereotypes. And I know what you’re thinking, everybody across the world loves chicken. It’s true, most people get down with the poultry; but as a black woman, singing passionately about chicken is not the move!”
The ad has been taken down and is no longer viewable, and while BK said on Tuesday that the video was pulled due to a licensing concern, many believe the company has simply had their eyes opened to a potential harmful gaffe.
Twitter is buzzing about the video today:
I really saw Mary J Blige singing bout chicken in 2012 tho. I’m still in a state of shock…..
That Mary J Blige Burger King commercial looks like a Dave Chappelle skit
