Marc Anthony is set to kick off his 15-city tour in San Diego on Friday, August 29!
Although he’s sold more than 12 million albums worldwide, and is now considered one of the most influential artists of his time, the 45-year-old singer recently revealed he wasn’t always the lead man.
During a recent interview with U-T San Diego, Anthony recalled his days as a background singer for the teen-pop group Menudo, which was led by Latin sensation Ricky Martin.
“They asked me to sing background vocals, so I’d sing background vocals, live, from the back of an eighteen-wheeler truck while they danced on stage,” Anthony recalled.
The two-time Grammy Award-winning singer also recalled how his voice was stacked to create sounds of harmony.
“Their microphones were on, but they were on very low (volume). I had four microphones. Why? So that I’d sound like four people,” he explained.
Anthony went on to share how working with the teen pop group was a learning experience that ultimately contributed to the longevity of his career.
“But any education is ultimately positive; I don’t care how bad or negative it is. Working with Menudo was an eye-opener, and that experience is what made me fight for the opposite with my music. It really bothered me, seeing (what Menudo did), especially after my father had instilled such serious things (about music) in me.”
