If you are into classic baseball history, I am sure you are aware of who Leland “Lee” MacPhail was. MacPhail, who was the oldest member of the Baseball Hall of Hame, sadly passed away this past Thursday.
MacPhail got involved with baseball through his father, who also was involved via co-owning the Bombers. During the start of MacPhail’s career, he started with some administrative jobs for various baseballs, working as a Farm System Director for the Yankees, as well as working as Club President for the Baltimore Orioles. MacPhail later became president of the American League (one of the two leagues that comprise of the Major League Baseball Association). ,
In 1983, MacPhail received a lot of media attention during the Pine Tar Accident/Game, which was a controversial Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees baseball game. While being president of the American League at this time, MacPhail made an executive decision to restart the game a month later while the controversy was looked into.
MacPhail was later inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988, joining his father who was already a member. When MacPhail joined the Baseball Hall of Fame, he was the second-oldest member; however, with the death of Phil Rizzuto in 1997, this rendered MacPhail as the oldest member.
On Thursday, November 8th, 2012, Lee MacPhail passed away at the age of 95. Many of MacPhail’s fans have left their condolences via Twitter:
