A Maryland neighborhood got a nasty surprise today when a small plane crashed into a trailer park, hitting two mobile homes. The pilot suffered injuries, but is expected to recover.
The Beechcraft BE 23 began sputtering in the sky around 10 a.m. this morning, according to witnesses, and hit the treeline before crashing into the mobile homes. No injuries other than the pilot’s were reported. Resident Joe Arrington pulled the pilot from the wreckage and into a safer area in case a fire broke out.
“Of course I was scared, I’ve never seen anything like this,” he said. “But I’m happy I could help.”
The Red Cross is assisting the families whose homes were damaged in the crash, and the 70-year old pilot is in critical condition at a local hospital. The FAA is currently investigating the cause of the crash, but residents say that there have been several instances of planes flying too low over the park on the way to Suburban Airport.
“I heard sputtering noises, then just a big bang and that was it,” said Andy Smith, a neighbor. “It was going to happen sooner or later — these planes fly so low all the time.”
Back in May, a small plane crashed into an apartment building in Virginia, narrowly missing a child’s bedroom and causing injury to the pilot and one passenger.
