On Monday, Beverly Hills police confirmed that Kanye West had been named as a suspect in an alleged battery case.

“The named suspect was identified as Kanye West by the victim and several witnesses,” says the police statement. “Mr. West had left the location prior to officers’ arrival. As of this writing, BHPD detectives are conducting a follow-up investigation.”

And like always, Kanye’s soon-to-be mother-in-law had to put her two cents in about the incident. “I do know that how it started was this person got really, a lot of racial, hateful, horrible things that he was saying. Apparently many times. Very hateful person. And I think that’s where it started,” said Kris Jenner. “I’m not quite sure how it ended,” she added. “I’ve literally been doing press all day today and have not been home so I haven’t talked to anybody to give you a better update. But somebody got really out of line.”

According to the Beverly Hills police, the responded to a 911 call at Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills, California at 12:15 p.m. on Monday. Apparently, Kim Kardashian, Kanye’s fiancé, was trying to make it into a furniture store, but was unable to do so because of she was surrounded by paparazzi.

An 18-year-old, white, bystander decided to help Kim, but went about it the wrong way. He started yelling racial slurs at the paparazzi, and when Kim told him to stop, he began verbally attacking her. Kim immediately called Kanye, who came running to her defense.

“Kim was walking into a furniture meeting for their new home,” a source told PEOPLE. “Kanye was there ahead of her for the meeting. So Kim gets there and walks into the building with a million paparazzi trailing her. At this point Kim was seriously afraid for her life,” the source continued. “He was going nuts. Kanye came down to help her but then the guy ran into a chiropractic office so Kim and Kanye walked in after him.” At that point, the bystander ran into a chiropractic office, continuing to yell at Kanye, who followed him in and allegedly punched him nearly 30 times.
