Last month’s shooting death of unarmed Florida teen Trayvon Martin has sparked a wave of racial debates, protests, and expressions of solidarity with the Martin family. It has also put shooter George Martin, a 28-year-old neighborhood watch captain who reportedly followed Martin back from a convenience store, in the public hot seat. Martin was not arrested after the incident, nor has he been since, but the case is going to a Grand Jury to determine if there is evidence enough for a murder or manslaughter case.
Meanwhile, members of the public have been demanding justice for Martin. The majority are simply calling for Zimmerman to be arrested and tried in the shooting, but an element of vigilanteism has also reared its head. The “New Black Panther Party” recently put announced a $10,000 bounty for Zimmerman’s capture, while public figures like Spike Lee retweeted an address thought to belong to the shooter. It did not, and resulted in a settlement between Jones and the retired Florida couple to whom the address belongs. Also in the category of tweets that can get someone hurt or killed, a Twitter handle @KillZimmerman emerged March 24.
The account’s “About” section reads: “TRAYVONMARTIN RiP This Page Is 4 Da Ppl Who Believe Zimmerman Should Be Shot Dead In The Street The Same Way TRAYVON Was. No Justice No Peace #KillZimmerman”. At the time of this writing the account is still active, with 426 followers, but it has not been updated since Wednesday. The most recent tweet, dated March 28, reads:
#zimmerman is so judge him
They act like they wanna charge me but I’m not the one who shot an unarmed kidWhat @KillZimmerman lacks in eloquence, sublety, and capacity for higher order thinking, he (or she) makes up for in prolificity. In four days the author (if you can call it that) composed (if you can call it that) 454 tweets, nearly all of them profanity ridden and expressing some variety of the sentiment for which the account was created. I don’t really want to give this guy too much of a platform, but I will give you one good example of his literary style:
If I see a bitch say some stupid shit imma curse ya fuck ass out. I’m Not The Peaceful Type.
Nearly every one of the account’s tweets has been responded to with criticism, ranging from “U R an Idiot” to “Well, you are acomplishing [sic] one thing: highlighting how stupid, ignorant and primitive some people are.” Many users have also reported the account, urging Twitter to take it down.
The Daily Caller reports that it contacted Twitter and received this response from a spokesperson: “We don’t comment on specific users or the status of accounts for privacy reasons.” According to the DC, Twitter did not say whether it will take action to suspend the account.
