Khloe Kardashian never left Lamar Odom’s bedside while he was comatose for three days in a Las Vegas hospital. The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star and the former Lakers player are still technically married due to a backup in the divorce court system in California.

Jim Harrick was Lamar Odom’s college basketball coach and a father figure, too. He maintains Khloe Kardashian is the best thing in Lamar’s life.

“I think she is the best thing to have ever happened to him,” Harrick said in an interview with USA Today.

Khloe Kardashian and several of her family members–mom Kris Jenner, sister Kim Kardashian West, and sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner–all flew to Las Vegas to be by Lamar Odom’s side when they got word of the accidental overdose that nearly took his life. The Jenner-Kardashian gang had returned to L.A. when Khloe Kardashian experienced an answer to her fervent prayers.

“She reached down and said ‘you know I love you’ and he kind of nodded,” Harrick said. “Three or four days after being scared to death and fearing the worst, that is a little hope, a little progress. She texted me that (information).”

The news got better for Odom as Friday wore on, too. Tests confirmed that his heart was starting to show evidence of improved function.

It will certainly be interesting to see what transpires between Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom as his condition improved. One of the reasons Khloe filed for divorce was because of Lamar’s great propensity for partying. Strong connections to that lifestyle remain, as evidence in his behavior at the Nevada brothel where he was discovered unconscious on Tuesday.

Lamar Odom isn’t out of the woods yet. Doctors haven’t said what–if any–damage occurred while he was deprived of oxygen.
