Kelly Ripa is a lot more like the average mom than fans may think. Sure, she appears on TV weekday mornings alongside Michael Strahan on Live! With Kelly and Michael. And she advertises Colgate toothpaste products on network TV as well. But the former soap opera star is still a mom–to three children–and she sets some hard and fast rules that they have to follow.
This past week found Kelly as a guest on another talk show–The Wendy Williams Show–where she opened up about parenting her teenage daughter, Lola.
“She recently lost her computer and phone privileges, so it’s like taking away oxygen,” Kelly Ripa explained. Hubby Mark Consuelos had touched on the story with Williams prior to Kelly joining the stage, but he didn’t divulge quite as much information.
Ripa was careful not to say too much that might hurt her daughter, however. When asked what Lola had done to deserve such a punishment, Kelly chose her words rather carefully–saying she didn’t do anything crazy. Instead she shared that Lola just “broke the rules.”
“We are like very fair parents and we will give you certain freedoms,” Kelly Ripa continued. “When you want privacy in a not-private world—like, you can’t have privacy and be on Instagram. I’m sorry, that’s not how it works. Privacy is for if you want to write a letter or write in your journal, I’m not going to read that. But if you want to tweet about what a pain in the butt your mom is, I’m gonna see that.”
Oh, dear. Did Lola do that?
Not sure about that one. But Kelly did catch her playing with her phone when she was supposed to be studying instead.
“I walked into her room and she wasn’t there,” Ripa recalled,” but there was her phone and it’s not supposed to be there during study hours. So I was like,” she mimed leaning over innocently, ‘”let me just dial in her code’…She knows I know her code, but she doesn’t think I would ever abuse that privilege.”
Lola was apparently showering when Mom found the found. That can make for a very upset 13-year-old girl–especially when Mom finds her Instagram posts.
Kelly Ripa: My daughter doesn't like me, but "I don't care" http://t.co/DTszgv7amc

“No, I don’t think she likes me, but I don’t care,” Kelly said. “I’m like, ‘I’m not your friend, I’m your mom. I’m not your friend.'”
Wendy Williams asked Kelly Ripa if she ever felt pressured to appear nice all the time–like she is on her show.
“I just feel an obligation as her mom to keep her living in the real world. I don’t care who you are or what you do, if your’e a mom you’re a mom. Everybody’s a mom. Beyoncé’s a mom, you’re a mom, I’m a mom—do you like the way I lumped myself into that group?”
Kelly Ripa seems to be a very grounded mom. And her daughter Lola is presently a bit ‘grounded’ herself–at least from using her phone and her computer. Ripa and Mark Consuelos are good, hands-on parents who–even though they live in the limelight–have long managed to put their children and their marriage first. They set a fine example for celebrity parents everywhere.
