Kay Robertson, the matriarch of the Robertson family who shares her strong Christian values on their reality show, A&E’s Duck Dynasty, recently revealed to US Weekly that her oldest son Alan Robertson was born before she and her husband Phil Robertson were officially married.
“Well, this is the first time I’ve shared this, aside from giving my testimony [in church],” Kay said. “When I made a vow to God and to [Phil], it was March 22, 1964. … It wasn’t legal.”
“That’s the truth,” she added. “We didn’t do the legal papers until April 11, 1968, after Alan, my oldest, was born. Alan says, ‘Yeah, I would be the B [bastard] in the family.'”
Phil and Kay are also parents to Willie, Jase, and Jep, all of which are featured on Duck Dynasty.
Although the papers weren’t officially signed until four years later, Kay says her union she made to God and Phil was sincere from day one. “But I want to tell you something,” Kay said. “My heart and my vow to God was true from the first day.”
Kay said that the date of their wedding is just a technicality and occasionally an inside joke between her and the family. “Now, the family laughs about it,” she said. “People ask, ‘When was your mama’s wedding?’ and the boys say, ‘Which, the pioneer wedding or the regular wedding?'”
In December, Phil finally gave his bride a wedding ring after more than 50 years of marriage.
